WEB PAGE DESIGN... An experienced visitor's point of view

by Daniel Deane

There are certain things that make a web page easy to navigate and still others that will chase away visitors. Below are some tips indicating elements that should be in place in every web page in your site.

  • IDENTIFICATION Who are you? Why do you have a web page and why should they return or do business with you? These are questions that should be answered on your title page and perhaps included in some form in every page on your site. A simple way of contacting you should be in place. One example of this is an invitation at the bottom of each page, to email comments to you, with a link that activates the email portion of the browser.
  • CONTENT DESIGN The download period is your most vulnerable time on your web page. Keep your index page simple.
  • Make sure you have text enough in the top of the page to give the visitor something to read while your graphics are loading. Keep graphics to a minimum. Use short paragraphs and a lot of room for the eye to rest. A designer or advertiser calls this "White Space." "White Space" is VERY IMPORTANT. It can make or break any advertising space. Too little makes a document seem too busy. Make sure your text margins can float if your skill or HTML editor can manage it. Include graphics that are in harmony with the rest of the page and the message that you want to present. Make sure your background and your text can be seen by persons who are colorblind. AND, if you are colorblind make sure someone else who is not colorblind previews your work before uploading it.

Email Marketing made easy -No skill required

Never place a white text on light background or dark text on a dark background. That is an immediate turnoff. It can make your visitor very irritated at the page designer. It may be just the thing to motivate them to look elsewhere for information and that elsewhere may not be on your site!

    Handicap Accessibility.
If possible, make your site determine if the visitor browser supports frames. If it does not, you should have an alternate page(s) with the information in large type, text only, for persons who are blind or have other sight problems and are visiting your site with a text reader machine. You may include an image in between paragraphs if it is fully described. If you do not want to do this for some reason the graphics should be at the end of the document with a warning that they are there and that this is the end of the text. Again provide your name, business name, phone number, address, and email address on this page if you want them to have it.

One last thing on the text only page. . . . Extra borders and === or -0=-=-= or the like sound like the text machine or the software has hung up like an old record player. Please do not use them.

  • SITE MAP or INDEX is necessary on every page. Link every page in some way to every other page in your site. Failing that, use a frames format and make sure that you preserve your margins on all sides of the frames. Place your site map in the right frame. I suggest that you provide a way for the person to determine where they just came from and a helper to get them back to the very last page presentation they visited on your site. The fewer times a visitor needs the back button on their browser, the less likely they will leave your site till they have seen it all.
    1. It is not advisable to provide invitations to leave your site on the top of your index page. If you advertise or provide links to another site, you might want to make sure there is a way for a visitor who left your site to return from THAT link. This is called a reciprocal link. You do not need to hide your links. Just do not leave invitations to leave where a person is really tempted to do so.
    2. When making lists with graphical bullets (such as picture of a globe, a diamond or ball), if possible make them into radio buttons or links to the area in your web page that illustrates your point. When using graphics, remember that many people will click on a graphic for a description, or expansion of the information that picture represents. Some websites use this to their advantage to create pleasant surprises for their visitor. Some visitors search for those surprises. Perhaps you should consider providing those surprises.
    3. The more often you change your web page, the more often a person may visit. There are services of which you may subscribe that informs the subscribers when a member site has changed.
    4. You may also create a guest register. Many people will sign the guest register, thus providing you leads for future activities. You may also notify the resulting mailing list when your web page has changed. If you are so inclined, a newsletter will provide you with a further opportunity to present your views or products.
    5. Once you have created your site, view it with as many browsers as you can. Read your site with an IBM and a Macintosh. I have been told that 62% of all web sites are created on a Mac and about 35% of the readers are on Macs.
    6. (Personal Observation)
If you are friendly to a Mac User
, you have a great chance to gain his loyalty. He may even advertise your site to other Mac Users. If you want a lot of positive hits on your page, create reasons for a Macintosh user to visit and ask for his referral to your page.

These are only nine of the many suggestions I have made when visiting a web site. I visit only 20 minutes. That is as long as I expect any visitor to remain interested in any site. If they need the bottom scroll bar to read your text, I expect them to leave immediately. Your visitor is your guest. Do not make them work to enjoy your site.

The following article demonstrates the useful information about how to get an ideal web designer to help you success in the business. You may find it useful if you are looking for a quality web designer but still do not know how to start.

One of the most popular ways of finding web designer is online resource. There are many of freelance website that they can find good quality at a reasonable price for web designer. However, some body may don't like having freelance web designer, especially if they have website for customer service or online payment. They prefer to have full time employee who can be both web designer and web developer in one person. This is because this kind of website require 24/7 service and if they have freelance to work, they could not guarantee the service in case if there is a problem with the website and this will cause the company losing profit. However, some companies still want to get freelance because they may have not much budget for this and the website itself is just a home page for products display and information. So it seems unnecessary to get full time web designer for only modify the website.

Ask for the designer's portfolio or sample work is also compulsory. If you decide to look for a web designer from freelance website. So it is good to ask for the website that he/she has done in the past. This could guarantee that they have qualification for your company to ensure the company's website is create in very good quality and appearance. If they do not provide the past work, so you may have to find the other one because this part is really important. However, I suggest that if you have any friend or colleague who has experience about hiring good web designer, then you should ask them for advice. This is because it is the good way as you get review and feedback from your friends about the work of the designer too.

The Rich Look like Beggars, and the Beggars Look like Kings

    By: Jon Morrow

If you saw my father on a normal day, you'd feel sorry for him. His clothes are worn and coated with a mosaic of dirt, paint, and other unidentifiables. His boots are solid blocks of mud. His head is covered with a worn-out baseball cap, usually soaked in sweat.

You'd think he was a beggar. But he's not. He's one of the wealthiest and fastest growing landowners in northern Mississippi.

Movies and television have created a stereotype of the millionaire, and like most stereotypes, it's completely false. Rich people don't drive fancy cars, live in mansions, or cart around entourages of sexy playthings.

They know better. As one of my most successful mentors told me, "Getting rich is not about how much money spend, but about how much money you keep."

To illustrate, here are some comments from my investors:

A car payment? Why, I can't remember the last time I made one.

About a year ago, my father invited all of our investors to a private conference in his home near Memphis, TN. You've never seen so many rich people. If you tallied up the net worth of everyone in the room, I'm sure you'd go well over $100 million.

When I drove up to the house though, all I could do was laugh. Looking at all of the cars in the driveway, you'd think you were at a retirement home. The newest car in the driveway was from 1998. The majority of them were models from the 80s... and older. None of them were freshly detailed or flashy. You would have never guessed that all of them were owned by millionaires.

Talking to the investors about them was also interesting. I didn't ask everyone about their car, but the few I talked with told me they'd paid for the car in full a long time ago. They were also focused on regularly maintaining the car. Performance was just as important as price.

Buy a mansion? God no. Who needs all that space?

Knowing how to leverage their money and tax benefits, you'd think millionaire real estate investors would live in huge houses. But you'd be fooled, once again. Most of the millionaires I know live in modest houses in good neighborhoods. The average value is probably around $300,000.

They also own the houses debt free. Usually, they bought their house years ago for a steal in a good area, and then they lived there while it appreciated. To properly leverage their equity, they keep credit lines open, so they can take advantage of short-term opportunities.

Wear a suit? No, I prefer to work in my underwear

Through a series of coincidences over the years, I've learned that nearly all of my investors work in their underwear or pajamas. When they're forced to leave the house, they usually wear sweats or khakis. During the past five years, I've never seen one of them wearing a suit.

    They have three reasons:

    • Cost. Dry cleaning is expensive. You save money by dressing down.

    • Practicality. Investors deal with a wide range of less fortunate people that distrust people in suits.

    • Comfort. Suits are uncomfortable, so unless you have to impress your banker, stay comfortable.

The Moral of the Story: Live like a Millionaire and You'll Become One

Not surprisingly, the most successful real estate investors I know are the most frugal people I know. I'm not talking about being miserly either. They live exceptionally well, but they do it with less money and more attention to practicality than pizzazz. If you want to get rich, act like them. Start living below your means and you'll see your wealth grow much faster.

Also, I've learned to be suspicious of people driving fancy cars and living in huge houses. While some are genuinely wealthy, most are in debt up to their eyeballs. They're usually insecure people, trying desperately to convince everyone they're rich. To use a metaphor:

You can judge a book by it's cover, but remember, the classics are rarely new and shiny. Their faded covers are evidence of their survival and their tattered pages were created by the hands of countless loving fans.

The Unearthed Secrets Of An eBay PowerSeller

Have you seen any sellers on eBay which shows a "star" and the word "PowerSeller" by the side of their names? PowerSellers are eBay's top sellers who have sustained a consistent high volume of monthly sales, a high level of total 98% positive feedback or better, and have met a threshold of compliance with all marketplace policies.

Sounds hard? Nope, not at all, in fact anyone can do it. Shortly, if you want to qualify for being an eBay seller you need:

    • To be an active member for 90 days.
    • Average a minimum of $1000 in sales per month for three consecutive months.
    • Achieve an overall Feedback rating of 100, of which 98% or more is positive.
    • Have an account in good financial standing.
Now we'll learn about the methods used by our fellow eBay PowerSellers. A successful auction has three elements which are: the title, a description and pictures of your selling item.

When listing, always write a clear, attractive and concise title. The first thing any potential buyers see will be your title so you should grab their attention once they enter. It should tell what the buyers want, make them nod their heads when they read your title. Some descriptive words like old, vintage, runs, works or condition statements like "New in Box", anything that is appropriate can get you better results than a bold headline.

Many people left a lot of money on the table when they depended just on "see photos" instead of writing a good description. A large number of auctions are filled with paragraph after paragraph of information about where to send the payments, how to send the payments, when to send the payments, who can bid and who can't which sometimes clutters the auction.

Email Marketing made easy -No skill required

It's really simple to include a good description which can make your potential buyers stay glued to what you say right until they make a bid or purchase your item and everyone in the world should do it!

By writing an accurate description you will make bidders more confident about your item. Not certain on what to describe? Search for similar items on eBay, and read the description, take down the catchy words then use it in your listing. The confidence can translate into higher prices.

As for your auction's pictures, use big clear photographs. The best way to get nice and clear photos is to take them using a digital camera. Other than that, it is also easier for you to upload the photos into your computer with a digital camera. Try and improve your pictures by adding suitable lightings as well, it can help produce better results in your picture's quality.

Now, all of us know that feedbacks are based on the seller's customer service. Whenever we go out somewhere for a meal, customer service is very important. Let's say DOME, people likes going there because the food has low calories, and of course, it tastes great. But what makes people feel comfortable eating there is the customer service. Good customer service is always defined by: a smile, fast service, and simple.

We'll need to always be pleasant to our customers. Don't be shy, be more humble than your customers and treat them as though they're your boss. When people know you have good customer service, they won't mind considering buying more items from you. Since you are a trusted person and easy to communicate with it, being your repeated customer in time to come will be great. If you have excellent customer service, it just hurts if I don't write you a good feedback and keep your items, right?

Selling the item to your customer doesn't mean he or she is done for good. There are a lot more ways to benefit from your current customers. After they've purchased your item, try to offer a bonus, like a free e-book or something that is useful. But first, they will need to sign up for your newsletter, or subscribe to your opt-in list. You can instead not only offer the bonus for the buyer, but all the other bidders. This way, you add up your opt-in list, make everyone happy, and all these current bidders can be potential buyers of your items in the future.

In your auctions, you can always put a link to your other auctions in your description and inform the surfers that you have more items for sale. By telling the viewers you have similar items for sale and can offer cheaper shipping & handling cost, it urges people to buy more items from you.

A guarantee is always part of the most important factor in your auctions. This can be a simple statement like if the item is not as represented you can return it for a refund. Using a strong guarantee can greatly increase your response. If you offer a guarantee you need to honor it, but if you're diligent, you will definitely not have many returns. If you want to know how a good guarantee statement sounds like, you can refer this one:

"100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE - IF YOU ARE UNHAPPY FOR ANY REASON JUST RETURN YOUR ITEM FOR A COMPLETE REFUND INCLUDING SHIPPING BOTH WAYS."

How does it sound? Safe enough to buy definitely! It doesn't matter if they refund your item in the future, you just need to sell your items to your customers and let them make their choices after receiving it. 863 words

At the end of your auction's description, always make it easier for surfers and maintain their urge of buying by listing the shipping & handling costs for your items. Refrain from letting them do the math or turn to other pages just because it's troublesome inquiring for the fees. A good example is:

"$5.00 shipping to US Destinations by Priority Mail. I will pack with care and ship with delivery confirmation for your protection. International shipping are sent by Airmail letter Post. I will combine items that end on the SAME day to lower your shipping cost."

This is absolutely clear and to the point. When you include this information, surfers will not have to figure out anything extra or look at other pages to find out the shipping information, and it can help increasing your response in sales!

People have many different opinions when it comes to how long they should list an auction. There's no definite answer to it, but five to seven days are the peak ones. Search results are presented by newly listed items or those items which are ending on the same day, which means the first and the last 24 hours are when most people will see one's auction.

Pack well! By packing nicely you inflict the message of how valuable your item is, and it increases your customer's satisfaction for the product. Chocolates like Ferrero Rocher or Kit Kat have nice packing and that urges people to buy it as well, noticed it before?

To be an eBay seller isn't hard at all, it takes a little time and effort, but that's it. Slowly build your customer database, keep the opt-ins, add up your positive feedbacks, continue providing good customer support, and you're almost there.

10 Steps to Successful Selling On Ebay

    By: Jane Foster
    Step 1: Identify your market.
Take a while to sit and watch for what sells and what doesn't out of the items you're interested in. Any market research data you can collect will be very useful to you later on. You'll probably see the sweet spots quite quickly - those one or two items that always seem to sell for a good price.

    Step 2: Watch the competition.
Before you invest any money, see what the other sellers in your category are up to, and what their strategies are. Pay special attention to any flaws their auctions might have, because this is where you can move in and beat them at their own game.

    Step 3: Find a product:
Get hold of a supplier for whatever it is you want to sell, and see what are the best rates you can get. Don't be afraid to ring round quite a few to get the best deal. If the eBay prices you've seen are higher than the supplier's, then you're set.

    Step 4: Start small:
Don't throw thousands at your idea straight away - get started slowly, see what works and what doesn't, and learn as you go. Remember that it's very cheap to try out even the craziest ideas on eBay, and who knows, they might just work!

Email Marketing made easy -No skill required
    Step 5: Test and repeat.
Keep trying different strategies until you find something that works, and then don't be ashamed to keep doing it, again and again. The chances are that you?ve just found a good niche.

Step 6: Work out a business plan:
A business plan doesn't need to be anything formal, just a few pages that outline the market opportunity you've spotted, your strategy, strengths and weaknesses of the plan and a brief budget. This is more for you than it is for anyone else.

    Step 7: Invest and expand:
This is the time to throw money at the problem. Buy inventory, and start spending more time on your business. Set a goal number of sales each week, increasing it each time.

    Step 8: Make it official:
Once you've made a few thousand dollars worth of sales, you should really register yourself as a business. Don't worry, it's not expensive or hard to do - a lawyer is the best person to help you through the process.

    Step 9: Automate:
You'll probably find that you're writing the same things again and again in emails or item descriptions. This is the time to give up on the manual method and turn to automated software that can create listings for you, and respond to completed auctions and payments with whatever message you provide.

    Step 10: Never give up:
Even when it looks like it's all going wrong, don't stop trying until you succeed. If you keep working at it then you'll almost always find that you make a real breakthrough just when things are starting to look desperate.

Once you get into the swing of things, you might start thinking that you should quit your job and take up eBay selling part time. But it's not always as easy as that - there are all sorts of factors that you need to consider.

One of the best ways to find a great idea is to check out the auction sites. Many people don't realize that great ideas are on practically every page of Ebay. One Step Ahead on Ebay!

    One Step Ahead on Ebay!

    By: Kevin Anthony

Selling on Ebay can be a good hobby or a nice profitable business for others. I like to sell on Ebay and other auction sites for both of these reasons. Below I will list some of the things that have helped me out enormously through trial and error.

    1. Determine if the product that you are going to auction is a one time sale or if you have a continuous supply of this item. This means that if it is a one time item that you are going to want to get the best price for it. The best way I found to do this is to put a reserve price on the item close to what you need to get out of it. I know that alot of people say that a reserve price will hinder the chances of selling an item, but it won't if you try not to be greedy. If you have a continuous supply of a product, taking a $15-$20 profit is the way to go on something like a $200 Digital camera because you will have many more sales.

    2. If you want a steady income on Ebay you need to find suppliers. The best way to do this is to determine what type of product you want to sell, and then start researching what that item is selling for on auction sites. Once you find a supplier that carries your product and you determine that you can profit at least 10% after your listing fees and Paypal fees if any, you are then ready to climb aboard the Ebay bandwagon.

Email Marketing made easy -No skill required
    3. The next thing you will want to do once you find the right supplier is to buy a few items to sell. This way you are going to test the suppliers quickness in getting the items to you. Also it is good if the supplier will dropship to your customers. The reason for this is sometimes you may get a item that is broke or scratched and you don't realize it until it is time to ship to your customer. A dropshipper can send this item to your customer just like it came from you.

I hope these few little tips will help you get started in a hobby on Ebay or maybe a lucrative business.

Image and Online Success and The Importance of Good Design

    By: Tyson Fenech
Naturally there are many aspects to succeeding online but the nature of business hasn't swayed. You must have a professional image and you must provide a great service for your clients. This is what makes a business grow. This is not another article telling you to be sure you have Meta tags, linking and all the other wonderful Search Engine friendly includes. This is a bare bones old school reflection on how companies are losing sight of the bigger picture.
    Put some heart into it
Most entrepreneurs have that essential vivacious approach to starting up a business and the truly successful ones will maintain that level of excitement to help cultivate a healthy and steady growth. A web site can help establish your business as a serious contender or just another hole in the wall. Which one are you? Some businesses place more emphasis on what they're going to have for lunch rather than the image they portray to their clients. Your excitement about your business shows in everything you do.
When getting a web site for your company be certain you place your trust and hard earned dollars with a design firm that is passionate about their work and has a proven record of accomplishment, understand why one charges $500 and another $3000. You will have a much better project if the designer has foresight and desire to see their work succeed and not just become another bank deposit.

If you surf online and scope out the millions of companies, it is amazing to see how many tired looking sites you'll come across. I can't imagine a company that sells from a brick and mortar store, allowing the front of their building to become decrepit with their sign barely hanging on by a couple of bolts. Not a good way of attracting customers off the street and into your establishment.
    The heart of your business
Do what you do best. Sell the products and services that define you and earn the capital. Promote your business in the best way possible, keeping honesty and integrity at the forefront. Do not sell yourself short. Invest into your growth and future developments.
There are countless articles on Search Engine Optimization and how to make money quickly. Have we forgotten the core of doing business and how the market is stimulated? There are plenty of ways to promote your business online and expand your demographic just be sure to focus on the important facets that make a company great. Provide and honest service and quality product. More than just attracting customers to your web site you want to retain long lasting relationships which will only draw more clients as time goes on.
Email Marketing made easy -No skill required

    Search Engine Friendly
No doubt search engine optimization is an extremely important aspect for the success of your business but can't stress enough that the importance of having a solid image must tie in. What many articles fail to point out is that SEO isn't the only thing to achieving online success. The focus tends to be on one aspect and never the whole picture. Business like everything involving human interaction revolves around the senses.
Okay so your site gets to the top of the search results and gets a click thru. Upon arriving to your site, which lacks any sense of presentation is quickly scanned, forgotten and on to the next site they go. The attention span of surfer's is on the decline. Yes you must have relevant content but it better be presented in the best possible way so when your competitors are visited by the same potential customer you stand out. It's all about standing out and making your presence known. When you first write your business plan (you do have a goal right?), one of the main things is to define your sole purpose and what the business hopes to achieve and how you stand out from everyone else.
    Building that niche
It is ideal to focus your efforts and find that little pocket where you can shine and grow. This is very helpful when creating your online image. Custom designed graphics, tailored to your business will help secure your position within your chosen niche market. A beautiful looking web site will not help your ranking but it will help secure client interest and entice sales. Many SEO specialists overlook the importance of branding, which is number one in order for a company to separate themselves from the pack. Don't allow customers the chance to forget your name. Be remembered and maintain your presence.

How to find a web design company

There is a new deal that people looking for affordable quality web site design service need to be on the lookout for. The main problem of this is the fact that not all of these services provide much in the way of quality. In the old days there was nothing short of amazing things coming out of the web design services that were in operation. Of course these services charged thousands of dollars for their service and not everyone could afford such a large bill. Well the times changed just like they do with everything and finding an affordable quality web site design service is more common place today and one needs to just know where to look. The other matter for discussion is find the actual quality embedded in a sea of poor quality companies that seem to spring from the well of eternal scams.

The problem with today's web design services is there is so many to choose from. One might say that a fair amount of competition is a good thing to help control the prices, but in all truth it has done more damage than good. Thanks to the new software programs that are currently available where software titles are sold just about anyone can claim to be an affordable quality
web design. But that does not mean they are of the quality that you will need to draw and impress visitors. If you are looking for the kind of website design that these low quality design companies provide there are more than enough free sites around the web that will help you to build such a site. In most cases you find that the actual affordable quality website design service is by far more professional and have been in business for a good amount of time. This is the first give away with a poor company. Look for a company that has been in business for a while and you will have something to work with.

An actual affordable quality web design will provide a variety of services through their website. Not only will they do web design, but they may even offer something a bit more suiting, like hosting and
domain name registration. To cover all the bases you should find an affordable quality web service that has been in business for a fair amount of time, that can provide you with references and that offers estimates on the design that you are seeking.

    Wirewrapped Ear Cuffs

    Beautiful Custom Made Ear Cuffs

    no piercing required

EarCuffs are designed to allow you a Custom fit by making all parts safely moveable and bendable. Though the cuff ring can be safely opened and closed as a way of putting them on, the following guidelines are recommended since the earcuff seems to naturally fall into the correct position when they are put on this way.

As follows: Start at the top of the ear, where the cartilage is thin and slide the earcuff all of the way flush onto the ear at the opening in the cuff ring. (Holding your ear taunt with one hand helps this.) Then slide the earcuff down to the middle of your ear, while simultaneously turning it toward your face. This helps guide the earcuff over the ridge in your cartilage and to drop into canal where it needs to sit.

The highlight of these earcuffs is that they are very adjustable due to their design and how wonderfully pliable twisted wire is. Every ear is different and these earcuffs allow for that. The twisted wire piece, referred to as the "design" portion of the ear cuff can be safely and easily adjusted with just your fingers to the angle, size, length or width of your ear. The soft wire of the cuff ring also affords the wearer the advantage of adjusting for comfort in wearing. You can close the ring tighter if it feels too loose to you or open it more if it feels too tight - above all THEY DON'T NEED TO PINCH. All my ear cuffs are handmade out of sterling silver or 14 GF wire wit semi precious stones or swarovski crystals.

    optimization or marketing a website

(my response to a recent email from a gentleman asking whether he should optimize or market his website)

Please note that optimizing the site so that the search engines will be able to index it is only a minor part of getting more traffic to your web site.

In regards to weather you need optimization or marketing let me start by saying that if you want your website to generate business you will always need marketing.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_marketing for a great definition of web marketing. in brief (Internet marketing is the process of growing and promoting an organization using online media. Internet marketing does not simply mean 'building a website' )

SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users.

The Bottom line for a business websites to be successful is an obvious  more traffic issue. Optimizing the site for search engines is of great  benefit but in no way should it be substituted for Marketing.

    My New Travel Sites.

So now I have 3 new sites that I’m taking over. The Main goal is to improve search engine marketing and get more visitors to the sites. So I’m going to keep track of everything I do to them to through my blog kind of a sounding board that I can look back on once they are making me lots of moula. LOL

First step I guess is to do the research on where they stand in the search engines now and see how much traffic they are currently getting. From there I’ll move on to researching keywords phrases to use and start gathering low cost and free marketing list.

The sites are travel related so I need to start gathering localized content for popular travel locations as well.

Another step take a look at the code. See how much optimization I need to do.

    More updates to come.

    Web Design Color Selection

The mood and emotions of your visitors can be influenced by the colors you select for your website. Colors affect us in numerous ways, both mentally and physically. A strong red color has been shown to raise the blood pressure, while a blue color has a calming effect.

Once you understand the basics, you can start learning how to combine colors into a harmonious whole. There are certain colors that look good together, while other colors look so painful you have to click away before they burn your eyes. And while you might recognize these combinations when you see them, there is a theory based on the color wheel as to which colors will look nicest together.

    Analogous Colors
These are the colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel. For example: green, yellow-green, and yellow; or red, red-orange, and orange.

    Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are those colors that are opposite one another on the color wheel. By using colors that are opposite one another, you create color schemes that have high contrast and so are brighter and more vivid.

    Color Triads
By placing an equilateral triangle on the color wheel, you can create color schemes that have a lot of life to them. The most basic color triad is the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. But others are: green, purple and orange, or yellow-orange, blue-green, and red-purple.

If you need more help here are a few tools on the web that have been very helpful when deciding on web design colors.

    THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Web design is a new profession if you compare it to other forms of design. No matter if we talk about print media design or furniture design it seems that all the different design disciplines have there own little aspects which are unique to that each. Web design for instance has to consider web safe colors and fonts, screen resolutions, browsers, and etc., however there are still some basic design principles that need to be followed.

    THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

    BALANCE

A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)

    GRADATION

Gradation of size and direction produce linear perspective. Gradation of of colour from warm to cool and tone from dark to light produce aerial perspective. Gradation can add interest and movement to a shape. A gradation from dark to light will cause the eye to move along a shape.

    REPETITION

Repetiton with variation is interesting, without variation repetition can become monotonous

    see notes on repetition

    CONTRAST

Contrast is the juxtaposition of opposing elements eg. opposite colours on the colour wheel - red / green, blue / orange etc. Contrast in tone or value - light / dark. Contrast in direction - horizontal / vertical.

The major contrast in a painting should be located at the center of interest. Too much contrast scattered throughout a painting can destroy unity and make a work difficult to look at. Unless a feeling of chaos and confusion are what you are seeking, it is a good idea to carefully consider where to place your areas of maximum contrast.

    HARMONY

Harmony in painting is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. eg.adjacent colours on the colour wheel, similar shapes etc.

    DOMINANCE

Dominance gives a painting interest, counteracting confusion and monotony. Dominance can be applied to one or more of the elements to give emphasis

    UNITY

Relating the design elements to the the idea being expressed in a painting reinforces the principal of unity.eg. a painting with an active aggressive subject would work better with a dominant oblique direction, course, rough texture, angular lines etc. whereas a quiet passive subject would benefit from horizontal lines, soft texture and less tonal contrast.

Unity in a painting also refers to the visual linking of various elements of the work.

There are many resources available and the following is a small list of some of the ones I use.

How to begin a career in graphic design

Well first off test you skills or even check out getting a certification. Alot of community colleges offer this type of certification.

The big advantage to certification over getting a degree is Money and Time. The fewer credits you take to complete an educational program, the less money you will spend, overall. By focusing just on design skills, certificate programs allow adult students to forgo unrelated academic material.

    Sell your design skills

Once you've learned skills directly applicable to graphics fields, you need to sell yourself, and your talents, to prospective employers. You will probably have a collection of projects you completed during your certification program that demonstrate some of your skills. Carefully scrutinize your portfolio before you begin applying for jobs. Make sure that each piece you decide to include is a piece of your very best work, and that it showcases your talents to the fullest.

Keep practicing. You might not land a graphic or Web design job immediately out of school. In that case, you need to work hard to make sure your skills stay sharp. Keep doing projects in your spare time, and read design how-to books and industry periodicals. Or, consider taking on freelance or contract projects to continue developing your skills and your portfolio.

A great way to begin freelancing is to start as a photo re-toucher. Many people do not know how to fix or edit photos, or do not have the time. They rely on skilled re-touchers to help make their family, wedding, or professional portraits look great. Other ways to break into freelance design include logo and branding development, or Web page building for start-up companies.
