Motorcycle club organizes park clean ups | WeAreCentralPA | WTAJ

Motorcycle club organizes park clean ups | WeAreCentralPA | WTAJ: "A motorcycle group in our region is making it their mission to clean up parks across Central Pennsylvania.

Every Tuesday, War Drivers President Todd Morgan hops on his motorcycle to clean a park.

The War Drivers Riding Club started the clean ups a year ago and members go along for the ride.

"It gives us a chance to have our kids go out somewhere safe to play," explained Morgan Todd, the President of the War Drivers Riding Club. "We don't have to worry about them running over needles and fisherman trash, bait hooks, stuff like that.

Tuesday evening they plan to clean up litter at Portstown Park in Huntingdon.

Lately they've been picking up more than just trash.

"Unfortunately in some of the small communities we're finding drug paraphernalia and pipes made out of beer cans and stuff like that near some of the schools," Todd said. "So you know those kinds of things we want to get out of the way of the kids."

The club members make sure to hand off the bags to police.

"We dispose of it accordingly, needles and bottles you know, the baggies we make sure they get thrown away," said War Driver member Kathy Hurley. "The key thing is not to leave them at the park we take them with us.. we can get in trouble for doing that, but if you're going to clean up you don't want to leave what you find there."

They welcome the community to get involved.

"Come on out," said Todd. "We have gloves, trash bags, and plenty of parks to clean up

The next clean up will be in Lewistown at Kish Park on June 31st. "

Ernie Garcia believes getting a used car should be as easy as buying a bag of chips.
That’s why the company he co-founded more than three years ago, Carvana, has built multi-story buildings resembling oversized vending machines in several cities — one is currently under construction along Sam Rayburn Tollway near Legacy Drive in Frisco — making it possible for customers to drop a coin in a slot and watch their newly-purchased used car delivered to them on a robotic lift.
For those who don’t want to bother with the car vending machine, Carvana offers another perk: free delivery of the car or truck to your home.

Call Box: Hendricks building went from ice to tile to beer | Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment | jacksonville.com: "J.S., Southside

Dear J.S.: The name embossed at the top of the building at 1461 Hendricks Ave. provides a partial clue. It says “South Jacksonville Utilities Company,” but it’s not the electrical kind. The company built the structure in 1927 and used it as an ice plant. Ice was needed by trains, and it was near what was then the San Marco Train Station.

At the time, South Jacksonville was an independent city that was incorporated in 1907. The South Jacksonville City Hall, which was across the street, was built in 1915 and served as the governmental seat until the city became part of Jacksonville in 1932, according to a city Planning and Development Department report.

Man's Search for Birth Mother Leads to Somers - Somers NY News - TAPinto

Man's Search for Birth Mother Leads to Somers - Somers NY News - TAPinto: "SOMERS, N.Y.--Seventy-six years ago, Lanny  Silks was born in Lewistown, Pa. Very shortly after that, his mother left him. Just two years ago, Lanny began his quest to uncover who she was. That genealogical journey has brought him to Somers.

“I grew up hearing people talk about my Mom and Dad Silks, my adopted parents,” the retired steelworker said. “They would say, ‘Abe Silks ain’t your dad.’ People just making remarks, thinking I wasn’t paying attention.”

But Abraham and Mary Alice Silks weren’t his adopted parents–not yet. Lanny’s birth mother left him with the family of his biological father, George “Bud” Corson. Lanny grew up believing that Bud, 23 years his senior, was really his brother. Mary Alice was actually Bud’s biological mother, and Lanny’s grandmother."

First Primitive Methodist Church of Carnegie recently celebrated its 125th anniversary and marked the 110th anniversary of the church structure at 640 Dow Ave.

Primitive Methodism began in England in the early 1800s in an attempt to restore the Methodist Revival begun under the ministry of John Wesley. In America, Methodist preachers invented a new form of Evangelism — the camp meeting — and, in 1840, the American Primitive Methodist Church was established.

The first pastor stationed at the Carnegie church was the Rev. John McGuinness. In May 1998, the current pastor, Daniel Pastorius, came to lead the small but active congregation.

Two Lewistown Pennsylvania Police Officers Cleared in Fatal Shooting of Charles Bossinger

Two Lewistown Pennsylvania Police Officers Cleared in Fatal Shooting of Charles Bossinger: "Two Pennsylvania Police Officers Cleared in Fatal Shooting
Two Lewistown police officers were ruled justified in using deadly force during a confrontation earlier this year.
SHAWN ANNARELLI OCTOBER 12, 2017 CENTRE DAILY TIMES (STATE COLLEGE, PA.) 0 Tweet Share Two Lewistown police officers were ruled justified in using deadly force during a confrontation earlier this year. LEWISTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT
LEWISTOWN, Pennsylvania -- Two police officers were justified in using deadly force, according to an investigation by state police at Huntingdon.

The officers will not be publicly named or charged in the police officer-involved shooting death of Charles Bossinger, Mifflin County District Attorney Chris Torquato said in a statement.

Bossinger, 53, died April 26 when he was shot multiple times on Oakland Avenue in Lewistown borough. The Lewistown police officers responded to the area after a 5:20 p.m. 911 call indicated Bossinger had threatened to shoot himself with a rifle and shots had been fired in an Oakland Avenue residence.

State police at Huntingdon spearheaded the shooting investigation, which Lewistown police were not involved in.

The investigation revealed more than a dozen rounds were fired in the residence, and the several rounds fired by police were accounted for outside the residence, according to Torquota. "A large number of witnesses" reported hearing commands to "put down the gun," "drop it" and "drop your weapon" prior to the shooting.

Bossinger allegedly exited the residence, walked away, struck a police vehicle, walked toward his residence and then encountered two police officers, according to Torquota. Bossinger was about 20 feet away from two police officers when one of the officers lost his footing and fell. The gunman allegedly ignored commands to drop the weapon and instead pointed a firearm at the downed police officer at 6 p.m., which is when the pair of police officers shot him.

"It is clear both officers feared immediate serious bodily injury or death would occur at the time they utilized deadly force in the discharge of their service weapons," Torquato said.

Officers justified in shooting of 53-year-old Lewistown man | WPMT FOX43: "Officers justified in shooting of 53-year-old Lewistown man
POSTED 9:10 PM, OCTOBER 12, 2017, BY SEAN NAYLOR, UPDATED AT 09:11PM, OCTOBER 12, 2017
FACEBOOK TWITTER PINTEREST LINKEDIN EMAIL

MIFFLIN COUNTY, Pa. — Two Lewistown Borough Police Department officers who shot and killed an armed man in April will not be criminally charged.

Mifflin County District Attorney Christopher Torquato announced Thursday that a Pennsylvania State Police investigation found that the officers feared for their lives and were justified in shooting 53-year-old Charles Bossinger.

The incident occurred on April 26 in Lewistown.

Police received a report that a man, in possession of a rifle, on Oakland Avenue was making threats to kill himself. It was also reported, during the call, that Bossinger fired shots within the residence. Officers arrived to the scene and noted that gunshots were in fact coming from the dwelling.

According to the Mifflin County District Attorney’s Office release, Bossinger exited the residence with a rifle and struck a police car with the firearm before turning back around toward the home. The man — ignoring multiple commands from law enforcement — then encountered the two Lewistown officers positioned on the side of his house.

Bossinger then approached to within 20 feet of the officers with his rifle pointing directly at one of them, the state police investigation reveals. As one officer tried to retreat, he fell to the ground. At that point, the officers yelled toward Bossinger to drop his weapon — he failed to comply. Bossinger was then shot by as his rifle was still pointed toward the downed officer.

The state police investigation adds that the two officers saw Bossinger’s left hand on the fore-stock of the rifle and his right hand near the trigger and reported that he made a statement to the effect that he has a round in the chamber.

A physical examination of the scene was conducted by the State Police Bureau of Forensic Services. The release states that physical findings at the scene confirmed that multiple rounds were fired inside the residence. The forensic services observed bullet holes in the house and a broken out front window. Bossinger’s loaded lever action Marlin .35 Remington rifle was also recovered.

Adhering to policies adopted by the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association in officer involved shootings and practice in general where an individual is not going to be charged with a crime, the two officers will not be named publicly.

McVeytown church installs blessing box | News, Sports, Jobs - The Sentinel

McVeytown church installs blessing box | News, Sports, Jobs - The Sentinel: "cVEYTOWN — Residents of the McVeytown area may be wondering what the strange new box is on the front lawn of McVeytown United Methodist Church.

It’s a blessing box.

An offshoot of the small free library movement, blessing boxes come in many shapes and sizes but they all have the same purpose — to provide free items for folks in need. The MUMC Blessing Box was conceived by the church mission team leader, Nicky Eddinger.

“I saw the idea being used in other communities and thought it was a great way to expand some of the mission efforts we were already doing locally,” Eddinger said.

She took the idea to her summer vacation Bible school class of teens, and they took full ownership of the idea. They helped adult leader Brent Dunmire build the box, took lessons in painting from church member Rhoda Wilson and then painted the box under Eddinger’s supervision. It was installed recently and is available for use.

Church and community members are invited to stock the box with non-perishable items such as canned goods, kid-friendly foods, cereal, snacks, toothpaste, toilet paper and the like. The box is open 24/7 for anyone with a need to help themselves."

Pennsylvania is home to an abundance of fall foliage, matched by a plethora of wide-ranging opinions on the best spots for viewing all that autumnal splendor.

PennLive asked a sampling of people on Facebook to suggest their favorite spots for leaf-peeping. Here are their answers.

Did your favorite spots make the list? If not, please share your suggestions in the comment section at the end of this post.

Michael Gadomski, an internationally known photographer who lives in the Poconos, summed up the quandary of many of our leaf-peepers, "Very difficult to say there is one best spot. The northern hardwood forest seems to have better autumn than any other forest type, especially in areas that have a great variety of tree species including conifers as green is a color also and contrasts beautifully with red."

However, when pressed to come up with just one spot, Gadomski pointed to Promised Land State Park, "especially around Promised Land Lake," where the fall color normally peaks around Columbus Day weekend, but could come earlier this year.

Former Pennsylvania Game Commissioner Ralph Martone chose a more general answer of a hunter's treestand, explaining, "How can you get a better spot to enjoy the fall colors than immersed in them. And, as an added bonus you can inhale the fragrance of fall and hear the sound of leaves gently touching the ground. Involving three senses are better than one."

Cresson, Cambria County, Pa. - A biker group in our region wants to remind drivers that they're back on the road.

May is Motorcycle awareness month and the War Drivers Motorcycle Club from McVeytown planned a special region wide ride this weekend.

Nearly 50 bikers traveled across our region Saturday.

The growl of motorcycles could be heard all day with a ride that had stops in Huntingdon, Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties.

Shawna Leahy has ridden motorcycles for the past 3 years and says there are scary moments on the road.

“Most of the times it's when they think they have the time to pull out in front of us and we have to quickly stop,” explained Shawna Leahy. “We don't have the stopping capacity that a car has and if there's a lot of people behind us we have to watch out for them as well.”

President of the club Morgan Todd says with it being Motorcycle Awareness Month, this was the perfect way for them to remind people that bikes are back.

“It's very important that drivers are aware that bikes are out there, it's that time of the year we're back on the road.”

Motorcyclists say for safety, drivers should check all their mirrors twice, especially when merging into another lane.

“We usually find ourselves in the blind spots so yeah, makes it a little hard on us because we have to watch for more than just pot holes and trash on the road,” explained Todd.

Leahy extends that advice not only to drivers in cars and other vehicles, but to other motorcyclists.

“Caution is the most important thing watch out for your brothers, watch out for your sisters that are riding,” she said, “Even if you don't know the person behind you who's on their bike. If you see hazards in the road let them know they're ahead.

They say with the warmer weather, there will be more bikes out on the roads and to keep an eye out.

“Keep your eyes on the road, we're small, you know. You can miss us in a heartbeat," said Leahy."
