McVeytown church installs blessing box | News, Sports, Jobs - The Sentinel: "cVEYTOWN — Residents of the McVeytown area may be wondering what the strange new box is on the front lawn of McVeytown United Methodist Church.

It’s a blessing box.

An offshoot of the small free library movement, blessing boxes come in many shapes and sizes but they all have the same purpose — to provide free items for folks in need. The MUMC Blessing Box was conceived by the church mission team leader, Nicky Eddinger.

“I saw the idea being used in other communities and thought it was a great way to expand some of the mission efforts we were already doing locally,” Eddinger said.

She took the idea to her summer vacation Bible school class of teens, and they took full ownership of the idea. They helped adult leader Brent Dunmire build the box, took lessons in painting from church member Rhoda Wilson and then painted the box under Eddinger’s supervision. It was installed recently and is available for use.

Church and community members are invited to stock the box with non-perishable items such as canned goods, kid-friendly foods, cereal, snacks, toothpaste, toilet paper and the like. The box is open 24/7 for anyone with a need to help themselves."
