Call Box: Hendricks building went from ice to tile to beer | Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment | jacksonville.com: "J.S., Southside

Dear J.S.: The name embossed at the top of the building at 1461 Hendricks Ave. provides a partial clue. It says “South Jacksonville Utilities Company,” but it’s not the electrical kind. The company built the structure in 1927 and used it as an ice plant. Ice was needed by trains, and it was near what was then the San Marco Train Station.

At the time, South Jacksonville was an independent city that was incorporated in 1907. The South Jacksonville City Hall, which was across the street, was built in 1915 and served as the governmental seat until the city became part of Jacksonville in 1932, according to a city Planning and Development Department report.
